Additional Information
The web site listed above is a lapsed domain -- that is, it USED to be the club's web site, but now they don't have one. That pretty much sums up how the place is run.
Some very attractive, talented and pleasant women work this club and THEY DESERVE BETTER! My arbitrary "7" rating would be much lower if not for the talent and personalities of the dancers, especially the small number of regular performers.
Several "semi-regular" dancers seem to use it as a "sideline" club and do most of their work elsewhere. And there have been a number of talented women over the past few months who came and went, never to be seen again, at least not at this place.
The tacky decor has not changed since I first went there in 1998. I stopped going for a few years because there seemed to be a few too many "shady" dancers, or at least ones who did not appeal to me as a customer. Just this past winter, however, I tried it again and found that the level of quality in the performers had improved dramatically.
Unfortunately, that's the only improvement. There are two stages but the smaller one is almost never used. Burned-out stage lights have been awating replacement for years. The plastic guard rail around the ringside counter has cracks in it and a dancer could cut herself. The poles are just ordinary pipes and aren't very smooth. One of the poles is near a parallel support beam for the ceiling, and a dancer could easily hit her head on it while revolving around the pole! The dance floor is filthy.
The sound system is mediocre and is hooked up to a CD changer which skips or gets stuck constantly -- hello? Ever hear of mp3s, iPods and computers?
There is no DJ. The dancers put on their own music before coming out on stage, and have to return backstage if the CD player screws up.
The Fitchburg-Leominster area is still pretty depressed economically, so if ever there was a club that needed a DJ to urge the patrons to cough up some dollars, this is it!
To top it all off, the service tends to be lousy! Not the dancers, mind you -- some of the waitresses aren't terribly on the ball and at least one of the male bartenders is too much in a world of his own to care about anything other than bossing the dancers around. Tell me, when you're the only guy standing at the bar, should it take five minutes for the bartender to hand you a bottle of water? SHEESH!
If you ask anyone who works there why things aren't better, they'll tell you: "Aw, the owner's going to tear this place down in a few months and build a new facility further back from the road." This is true: Route 12 is due to be widened and the club has already excavated land behind the existing building for the new one. BUT:
(1) the City of Fitchburg is dragging its feet and throwing permitting roadblocks in the way of the project.
(2) Although the "plan" is to rebuild by this autumn, who knows how long it will actually be.
(3) In the meantime, shouldn't the old club be making money?
If the answer to #3 is yes, why the half-baked marketing? Why the slipshod management? Why does no one clean off those suspicious white stains on the girly poster in the Men's Room?
As it stands right now as I write this (late April '06), the Other Side is like the Fitchburg-Leominster area in microcosm: lots of potential, but detereorating for years. It's an absolute MIRACLE that so many classy dancers (and some, but not all, of the wait staff) consent to work there.
Having said all that, PLEASE go patronize the place and evaluate it for yourself. Tip heavily. Get a private dance or two. And if you can, go in the afternoon when there are more dancers than customers!
