Additional Information
After working in Atlanta for 2 years, I thought it might be a nice change to work in Birmingham- about 2 hours away. After doing some research online, I found out that the better clubs were The Furnace and Sammy's. I ended up going to the Furnace. After following the directions there from Google, I thought I had gotten totally lost because it seemed like I was in some industrial area in the middle of nowhere- but that's where the club is. I got there around 8 PM - which is when they told me to get there. I got dressed, and then they had we wait to audition in a chair next to a side stage. Then another girl - we'll call her Alexis -- joined me to wait to audition too. She worked over at Sammy's and was looking for a change of scenery, too. While we were waiting, I got a good look at the place. It is very nice. The girls are about average, what you would expect from a not so big city. It was Saturday night, and it was DEAD. But then, it was early.
After an hour, we were both told to go on (separate) stages. We both danced for 2-3 songs. I made about $5-7. Alexis made about the same. Then we both went into the manager's office, and she told us that we would have to wait for the general manager to show up so that we could audition AGAIN. In the meantime, she told us that we would have to get a dancer permit AND a business license (since we are independent business owners), which would cost several hundred dollars, and we would not be able to work until then. We were only allowed two non-champagne drinks per night. After than champagne cocktails only, and we were required to sell at least 2 of those.
So, then we went back to waiting. And waiting. Every so often a bouncer would come by and say the general manager was 'on the way'. He was 'on the way' until midnight, at which point, I got up and told them that if the manager didn't respect my time, I didn't want to work there. As I was packing up my things, several dancers came up to tell me that I shouldn't be offended- that they all had to go through the same thing- it was a test to see if I really wanted the job. As I was leaving, a bouncer told me that the manager really was on the way, as soon as the Alabama game was over. Which of course, just infuriated me more. All he had to do, was tell me to come back after midnight, or come back on another day - not tell me he was on the way for 3 1/2 hours.
Alexis and I spent so much time chatting that we ended up exchanging numbers before I left. She did get hired there, and she worked there for a month before going back to Sammy's. She said that it is almost always dead til midnight- you make all your money between 12-2. Dances are $10. You can sometimes charge $20 for those that expect a little more mileage (all of them), but that the skanky hoes in the club are low balling at $10, and screwing up everyone's money. And VIP might as well not exist.
