Additional Information
Make no bones about it: this club is a dive. Ripped couches, juke box in lieu of a DJ, veteran strippers who look a little worse for the wear, busted lockers in the dressing room. But it wears its dive-ieness with a badge of honor. This club is charming, seedy in the way a good strip club ought to be. It has the atmosphere and quirkiness of a strip club straight out of a David Lynch movie. There's something almost hip about it.
The place is called Mickey Martin's Ship Wheel, and the whole place has the feel of a long-sunken pirate ship. There are nautical accessories everywhere--a world map on the wall by the pool tables, a ship masthead by the door, a ship wheel in the back. The ceiling is hung with heavy, low-hanging beams, so it actually feels like you're in the belly of a ship.
The management is super nice. Nicki, the MC/manager, has been there over 10 years and has rad taste in music and is a former stripper. The bartender, Jerry, has been working there for 28 years!
The lap dances are $30; the house keeps $10. House fees are $25 if you are there by 10 pm, and you work a 6 hour minimum shift. Before each stage rotation, you pick out 3 songs from the jukebox, which is well-stocked with Nine inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and some current stuff. It was one of the best juke boxes I've seen in Metairie and I loved getting to pick my own stuff instead of having to submit to top 40 crap.
You have to wear pasties on stage; most girls just duct tape their nipples. Private dances are supposed to be performed on a little stage--I ignored that rule, but some girls adhere to it. It's all up to you. There's no separate VIP area, but customers can keep you in the lap dance area for $150 for 45 minutes. The club gets $50 of that.
Customers were willing to tip and buy dances. I didn't make great money at this club, but it was average for Metairie, and I made it more easily than I have at other Metairie clubs. The stage has actually got a proper pole!
Overall, this is a charming dive with super sweet staff and decent money potential.
